How it works

How dentist-led whitening actually works.

Step-by-step

Not sure where to start?

Book a first visit or call 07 823 1210, and we'll help you figure out what you actually need.

Why this matters

Brighter teeth,
without the gimmicks.

Over-the-counter whitening kits are limited by law in how strong they can be, and one-size-fits-all trays often leak gel onto the gums. The result is often slow, uneven, and uncomfortable. Dentist-led whitening uses a professionally fitted system, custom trays where appropriate, and a strength of gel that works for you.

More importantly, dentist-led whitening is supervised. We can spot the small issues that should be treated before whitening (cavities, cracked teeth, gum recession) and avoid the discomfort and disappointment that comes when those issues are missed.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Yes, when carried out by a dentist. The materials used in dentist-led whitening have been used safely for decades. The most common side effect is short-term sensitivity, which usually settles within a few days. Some patients are not suitable for whitening, which is why we always start with a consultation.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Results from professional whitening typically last between one and three years, depending on lifestyle factors like coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking. Patients who maintain a regular hygiene appointment schedule often keep their results longer.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Most patients find professional whitening comfortable. Some experience short-term sensitivity to cold during or after treatment, which usually settles within 24 to 48 hours. We can adjust the strength of the gel, recommend desensitising toothpaste, or pause treatment if needed.

Can everyone have their teeth whitened?

Whitening works on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers, or bonding, which is why we always assess your teeth first. Whitening is also generally not recommended during pregnancy or for under-18s. The consultation will tell us whether you are a good candidate.

Is dentist whitening different from over-the-counter products?

Yes. Dentist-led whitening uses higher-strength gel (only available through a dentist), custom-fitted trays that prevent gum irritation, and supervision before, during, and after treatment. The results are faster, more even, and more predictable than over-the-counter kits.

Where is Cambridge Dental located?

Cambridge Dental is at 9A Anzac Street, Cambridge 3434, in the Waikato region of New Zealand. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
