How it works

What happens at your hygiene appointment.

Step-by-step

Your hygiene visit is part of the wider Cambridge Dental approach. If your hygienist picks up anything during your appointment (a cavity, an early sign of gum disease, an area to watch), they will let your dentist know straight away. Small problems are able to be addressed.

Why this matters

Healthy gums are the foundation
of a healthy mouth.

Plaque builds up every single day. Once it hardens into tartar, it cannot be removed at home, only by a dental professional. Left on the teeth, tartar irritates the gums, and irritated gums are the start of gum disease. A regular hygiene appointment keeps the cycle from beginning.

Beyond the health benefits, a professional clean removes the surface staining that builds up from coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking. Most patients notice the difference straight away, both in how their mouth feels and in how their teeth look.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Is dental scaling painful?

For most patients, dental scaling is not painful. You may feel pressure, vibration, or a cool spray of water. If your gums are inflamed or you have a lot of tartar build-up, the first appointment can feel sensitive in places. Tell the hygienist as soon as anything is uncomfortable and we will adjust.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned by a hygienist?

Most adults benefit from a professional clean every six to twelve months. Patients with gum disease, heavy staining, or higher risk factors may need more frequent visits.

Can I book a hygiene appointment without a dentist?

Yes. Cambridge Dental patients can book a hygiene appointment directly with our hygienist. New patients are usually asked to have an initial check-up first so we can confirm the right kind of clean for your mouth.

Will my insurance cover a hygiene appointment?

Some private dental insurance plans cover a portion of routine hygiene appointments. Cover varies by insurer and plan. Some plans pay us directly, others will reimburse you after you have paid for treatment. We can provide a written, itemised invoice for your insurer either way

How long does a hygiene appointment take?

A standard hygiene appointment takes 45 minutes. If you have not had a clean for a long time, we may need more than one visit to do the job properly.

Where is Cambridge Dental located?

Cambridge Dental is at 9A Anzac Street, Cambridge 3434, in the Waikato region of New Zealand. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
