Most New Zealand adults have heard the same advice their whole lives: see your dentist every six months. It is the default recommendation in posters, in school visits, on the back of toothbrush packets. For a lot of people, six months is exactly right. For others, it is too often, and for some, it is not often enough.
The default: every six months for most adults
The New Zealand Dental Association recommends a routine dental examination every six to twelve months for most adults. The six-month figure exists for a good reason. Plaque builds up every day, even with careful brushing and flossing. Once it hardens into tartar, it cannot be removed at home, only by a hygienist. Six months is roughly how long it takes for new tartar to start causing problems for most people.
A routine check-up at this interval also catches small problems while they are still small. A cavity the size of a pinhead is a quick filling. Left alone for a year, the same cavity can need a root canal.
When six months is too often
If you have an exceptionally healthy mouth, low decay risk, no gum disease, and excellent home care, your dentist may suggest you can stretch to once a year between routine check-ups. We do not push extra appointments on people who do not need them. If you fall into this group, we will tell you.
When six months is not often enough
Some people benefit from more frequent visits, every three or four months. The most common reasons are:
A history of gum disease, even if it is currently under control.
A higher risk of decay (medical conditions, dry mouth from medications, or a diet high in acidic drinks).
Recent treatment that needs monitoring (a new crown, a deep clean, or orthodontic work).
Smoking, which raises the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
Pregnancy, when hormonal changes can affect the gums.
If any of these apply to you, the standard six-month rhythm may not be the right one. We will recommend a schedule based on what we see, not on a generic timetable.
The cost of waiting too long
Skipping check-ups for years is, by a wide margin, the most expensive thing you can do for your teeth. Most of the bigger dental bills people end up with (crowns, root canals, extractions, implants) are the result of small problems that were not caught early. A check-up is one of the cheapest appointments in dentistry. The treatment that becomes necessary when one is missed for too long is not.
What if it has been years?
If it has been a long time since your last visit, you are not alone. Many of the patients we see at Cambridge Dental have been putting it off for one reason or another. The first appointment is short, calm, and focused on understanding what is happening rather than fixing everything at once. Nothing is decided or done until you are comfortable. We treat at your pace.
How to decide what is right for you
The honest answer is: you cannot decide on your own. Your dentist will tell you what is right after the first visit, based on what they see. If you are not sure where to start, book a check-up and ask. We will give you a recommendation that is specific to you, not a generic six-month default.
Cambridge Dental welcomes new patients of all ages. A check-up is a calm, thorough, no-pressure appointment, and the easiest way to find out what your teeth actually need.
